About the Current Artist | Jhulan Mukhaji, MD

I am a self-taught artist, and work mainly in pastels and oils. My work is figurative. I am stimulated by a wide variety of subject matter, and like to express myself with color. Art is a sensual experience and I enjoy exploring its varied visual boundaries. Although my work is representational, I do not feel constrained by any sense of photographic accuracy. Over the passage of years, this freedom has found expression in a blending of the figurative with an impressionistic strain. I have little knowledge of what lies ahead, but the journey remains a source of great excitement. My paintings are a pictorial diary of this evolution.

I spent my growing years in India. In 1977, I emigrated to the US, where I taught and practiced cardiology for over four decades. In 1987, my wife and I moved to Kansas City, where we raised our three sons. Our children are now grown, and we look forward to their visits to our home in Prairie Village with much anticipation and joy. Other interests of mine include traveling, reading, and playing a mediocre game of tennis. I also struggle with Spanish lessons on Duolingo, and work diligently on broadening my appreciation of good Scotch whisky.

My mother was an accomplished batik and fabric artist, and painting was an integral part of my formative years in India. While on the cardiology faculty at the Medical College of Virginia, I had the privilege of working with Ann Lyne, whose instructional heritage goes back to Hans Hoffman and Henri Matisse. Beverly Nichols of the KC Art Institute introduced me to the medium of pastels, and over the years I have had the good fortune of painting with many talented artists in the Kansas City art community.

I am a member of the Kansas City Artists Coalition, InterUrban ArtHouse, and the MidAmerica Pastel Society. The revenues from my art sales help raise funds for various local charities.
